About menus
Domino menus are a powerful and flexible tool that enables you to create menus with two or more courses and even a product choice for each course. Menus can contain both food and drinks.
Since menus can be configured in different ways, here are some common use scenarios that you can adapt to your needs, from the simplest to the more advanced ones:
Scenarios:
- Set two-course menu
- Three-course menu with dish choice for each course
- Tapas menu - several dishes with only one course
- Valentine's day menu (one menu for more than one person)
- Menu with optional products (extra charge for a product, e.g. drink package)
- Menu with upgraded products (extra charge for a more expensive product)
Menu functionality relies on courses. For more info about courses, check out Working with Courses.
Menus created in Domino are fully functional in Handy.
Creating a new Menu product group
It is good practice to create a separate Product group for menus for a better overview.
- Log in with a user that has Manager account level permissions and navigate to Backoffice/Sales/Products and select a group below which you want to create a new Menu group and select the Add symbol in the Product groups window:
- Configure the Name property and confirm with OK:
NOTE: Do not configure VatCode for the product group since VAT is calculated depending on the products in the menu. For more info on how VAT works with menus, check out VAT on menus.
Set two-course menu
This guide explains how to create a basic menu with two courses: a starter and a main course with a fixed dish choice.
- Log in with a user that has Manager account level permissions, select the Menu product group and select the Add symbol in the Products window:
- Select Menu product:
- Configure Name and Price:
- Select the Plus symbol to add the number of desired courses, in this case two:
NOTE: Domino is by default configured with three courses. If you would like to have more than three courses available, contact Trivec Support.
- Select the correct course from the drop-down menu for both courses:
- The result should look like this:
- Now, you will be adding a product to the course. Select the course in your menu and select the product group to filter the visible products:
- Finally, select a product and select the Plus symbol to add it to the course:
- Alternatively, you can search for the product:
- The result should look like this:
- Repeat the steps above to add a product to the Main course and confirm with OK.
- Drag and drop the product you just created to a product page:
This menu product will now contain the two pre-configured courses:
Don't forget to configure how you want the menu to be displayed on reports and whether table is a requirement, for more info, check out All-in menu and Table or BarTab Required.
Menu with product choice
This guide explains how to create a menu where guest can choose which product they want in a course.
- Create a menu with 3 courses (appetizer, main course, dessert) by following the Set two-course menu guide.
- The result should look like this:
- Now select each of the courses and add 3 products to each course (for info on how to add products to a course, check out Set two-course menu).
- The result (in case of Appetizer course) will look like this:
- Confirm with OK and drag and drop the menu to a product page.
This menu when added to bill will prompt for dish selection for each course:
Once products for each course have been selected, menu will be added to the bill:
It is possible for different Guests to choose different products on their menu, in this case where 2 menus are ordered on same table with different appetizers and desserts:
If Compressed mode is disabled, menus will be displayed separately:
Tapas menu - several products with only one course
This menu could be used in a restaurant with a concept similar to tapas, where Guest pays a fixed sum and recieves the predefined dishes in a single course.
- Create a menu with five courses and set them all to Main course by following the Set two-course menu guide.
- The result should look like this:
- Add a different product to each of the courses, confirm with OK and drag and drop the menu to a product page. For info on how to do that, check out Set two-course menu.
When added to bill, this menu will add all the configured products to Main course:
Valentine's day menu (menu for more than one person)
This menu could be be used, for example, when one menu product is intended for more than one guest, and each guest chooses what they want form a fixed list of products.
- Create a three course menu by following the Menu with dish choice, with a choice of starter, main course and dessert.
- The result should look like this:
- Set the the MinProdCount and MaxProdCount value to 2 for each course:
- Confirm with OK and drag and drop the menu to a product page. For info on how to do that, check out Set two-course menu.
This will cause the menu to ask which 2 products for each course the guest has chosen, after all choices are made, menu will be added to the bill:
This example menu is intended for two guests, but the same solution could be used in case a guest is allowed to choose from more than one product in a course, e.g. in a tapas style menu where several small courses can be chosen from.
Optionally, you can set the MinProdCount setting to 0, enabling the guest to skip ordering a product in a course if they so wish, in that case the staff will have to select OK to skip the choice of product for this course.
Menu with optional products (extra charge for a product)
This menu enables the guest to add additional products for a fee, for example, a wine package.
- Create a three course menu by following the Menu with dish choice, with a choice of starter, main course and dessert.
- The result should look like this:
- Add a new course to the menu. but this time, don't configure the course and check the Optional property and enter the BasePrice for this course, this will be the additional fee for adding this optional course to the menu:
- Add the products to the course, for info how, check out Set two-course menu. In this case, there will be adding two glasses of wine to choose from:
- Confirm with OK and drag and drop the menu to a product page. For info on how to do that, check out Set two-course menu.
When added to the bill, this menu will ask for choice of obligatory products and the optional product (wine) which can be skipped:
Once all obligatory products are selected, menu will ask whether guest would like an optional product. Here the staff can select OK to skip the optional product:
In case guest has decided to add the optional product, it will be added to the menu with the additional cost:
By configuring the BasePrice property of a course, we are overriding the default price of a product (5€). In case you have a special product for this menu (e.g. Menu wine package), you can leave the property unconfigured and the product default price will apply instead. BasePrice is a simple solution to provide discounts for optional products when they are a part of the menu.
Menu with upgraded products (extra charge for a more expensive product)
This menu allows you to add more expensive items for an additional charge.
- Create a three course menu by following the Menu with dish choice, with a choice of starter, main course and dessert.
- The result should look like this:
- Select a course and add a product where you want to configure an additional charge. For info how, check out Set two-course menu. In this case, there will be adding a sirloin steak. The result should look like this:
- Select the product and configure its Extra Price property, this will be the additional cost for having this product (you might have to scroll to the right to display the column):
- Confirm with OK and drag and drop the menu to a product page. For info on how to do that, check out Set two-course menu.
When added to the bill, this menu will display the extra cost of a certain product:
When added to the bill, the extra cost for a course will be added to the menu cost:
Removing products or courses
Products and courses are removed from the menu similarly to how they are added, by selecting course/product and the Minus symbol. However, they are not removed straight away, instead they are marked in red and only removed when OK is selected and the menu settings are saved:
If a course or a product is marked red and about to be removed, you can "un-remove" it by selecting it and the Minus symbol again.
About menu properties
VAT on menus
In menus, VAT is calculated in proportion to the value and VAT of the products added to the menu.
For example, a menu consists of one starter (regular price 5 €, 12% VAT), one main course (regular price 10€, 12% VAT) and one glass of wine (regular price 5€, 25% VAT). The price of the menu is 15 €.
The total value of 12% VAT products is 15€, and the total value of 25% VAT products is 5€.
The menu value (15€), in this case, is divided as follows:
- 75% of menu value (11,25€) with 12% VAT
- 25% of menu value (3,75€) with 25% VAT.
All-in menu
If this menu property is enabled, display price and VAT are not distributed on containing products on the reports, and the total amount is displayed on the menu product. If you want to be able to see all containing products in a VAT report, this setting should be disabled. For example:
- If All-in menu setting is enabled, menu contains a starter, main course and dessert, the report will only display the menu as a sold product.
- If All-in menu is disabled, the report will contain the starter, main course and dessert, but their value (and VAT) will be reduced by the proportion of their value in the menu.
NOTE: Whichever setting you use, the VAT will be calculated correctly on the receipt, this setting only affects how the results are displayed in the reports.
Incomplete Menu Option
This option forces the user to input all menu items either when taking the order of before closing the ticket. Here are the three ways this option can be configured:
- Off (default value): No restrictions are imposed, the menu can be sent and closed as long as at least one product is selected.
- OnBill: To close the ticket containing the menu, a product must be selected for each non-optional courses.
- OnOrder: To validate and send the order containing the menu, a product must be selected for each non-optional courses.
Table or BarTab Required
If this menu property is enabled, table or bartab are required to be able to add the menu to the bill.
